Joe Burrow
Joe Burrow Reports for offseason workouts
Mon, May 2, 2022, 10:32 AM
Burrow (knee) reported for the start of Cincinnati's offseason workouts Monday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Burrow is recovering from a left MCL sprain, but he avoided surgery for the injury, and the Bengals haven't expressed any significant public concern about the star quarterback's health. It remains to be seen, however, whether Burrow's rehab has progressed enough for him to begin offseason activities without any limitations. In any case, Burrow now will benefit from another offseason to build chemistry with top wideouts Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, the latter of whom is recovering from left labrum surgery.
Tee Higgins
Tee Higgins Bouncing back from shoulder issue
Tue, Apr 12, 2022, 4:10 PM
Higgins had the labrum in his left shoulder repaired last month, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Analysis: The report notes that the wideout, who was spotted at a Cincinnati Reds game Tuesday with his left arm in a sling, is expected to recover from the procedure well before training camp. This past season, the 2020 second-rounder caught 74 of his 110 targets for 1,091 yards and six TDs in 14 games. In 2022, the 23-year-old will reprise his starting role in a Bengals wide receiver corps that also includes the ascending Ja'Marr Chase as well as Tyler Boyd.
Mitchell Wilcox
Mitchell Wilcox Re-signs with Cincinnati
Fri, Apr 8, 2022, 1:26 PM
Wilcox signed a one-year deal with the Bengals on Friday, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Wilcox appeared in 15 games for the Bengals last year, but the majority of his snaps came on special teams. Across 81 offensive snaps, the 25-year-old tight end caught three of five targets for 16 yards. He figures to garner a similar role in 2022, as Cincinnati's tight-end room remains essentially the same after swapping C.J. Uzomah -- who signed with the Jets this offseason -- for Hayden Hurst.
Stanley Morgan
Stanley Morgan Back with Cincinnati
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 10:55 PM
Morgan signed a two-year contract with the Bengals on Monday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.
Analysis: Morgan didn't factor much into the team's passing game a season ago, and he will likely serve as receiver depth and a solid special teams option in 2022. During his first three seasons with Cincinnati, he's tallied five receptions for 29 yards on 14 total targets and has one rushing attempt for three yards. Morgan also finished with 22 yards as a kick returner a season ago.
Trenton Irwin
Trenton Irwin Back with Bengals
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 3:36 PM
Irwin re-signed with the Bengals on Monday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Analysis: Irwin appeared in seven games for Cincinnati last season and will rejoin the team for 2022. The 26-year-old had two catches for 34 yards and also returned three kickoffs for 31 yards in seven games.
Hayden Hurst
Hayden Hurst Joins AFC champs
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 2:14 PM
Hurst is signing a one-year contract with the Bengals, EnterSports Management reports.
Analysis: Hurst will help replace C.J. Uzomah, who signed with the Jets earlier in the week. The Bengals also have Drew Sample, a 2019 second-round pick, while Hurst himself was a 2018 first-rounder. Neither has emerged as a consistent pass-catching threat in the NFL, but Hurst has shown some flashes, including a 30-349-2 receiving line on only 39 targets in 2019 with the Ravens, followed by a 56-571-6 line on 88 targets in 2020 for the Falcons. He then dropped to 26-221-3 in 13 games last year, working behind standout rookie Kyle Pitts in a subpar offense. If nothing else, Hurst should get more red-zone looks in Cincinnati, playing with Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Co.
Brandon Allen
Brandon Allen Re-ups with Cincinnati
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 12:32 PM
The Bengals re-signed Allen to a one-year contract Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Allen will return for a third straight season as the top backup to Joe Burrow (knee). The 29-year-old was reportedly Cincinnati's top choice for the No. 2 spot during the 2022 season, likely due to his familiarity with coach Zac Taylor's system.
Mike Thomas
Mike Thomas Re-signs with Bengals
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 10:13 AM
Thomas is re-signing with the Bengals on Thursday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: Thomas will return for a third straight season in Cincinnati, where he recorded five catches for 52 yards on 11 targets last year. The depth wideout and special-teams contributor remains off the fantasy radar, however.
Trent Taylor
Trent Taylor Signed to Cincy's offseason roster
Tue, Feb 22, 2022, 4:37 PM
The Bengals signed Taylor to their offseason roster Tuesday.
Analysis: Taylor was elevated to the active roster for each of the Bengals' final eight games, including the Super Bowl. The 2017 fifth-round pick operated primarily as the teams' punt returner, but he did catch a critical two-point reception during Cincinnati's comeback in the AFC Championship Game. He figures to have a similar role next season.
C.J. Uzomah
C.J. Uzomah Needs another MRI
Wed, Feb 16, 2022, 9:29 AM
Head coach Zac Taylor said Wednesday that Uzomah (knee) is scheduled to undergo another MRI, Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site reports.
Analysis: Uzomah was able to play through the MCL sprain of his left knee in Sunday's Super Bowl LVI matchup with the Rams, securing both his targets for 11 yards in the Bengals' 23-20 loss. The 29-year-old is coming off a career year, having racked up 493 yards and five touchdowns on 49 catches in the regular season. The fact that he's headed for another MRI could suggest that surgery might be on the table for Uzomah, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year in mid-March.
Joe Burrow
Joe Burrow Has MCL sprain, won't need surgery
Wed, Feb 16, 2022, 9:17 AM
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said Wednesday that Burrow (knee) has been diagnosed with an MCL sprain, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: According to Geoff Hobson of the Bengals' official site, Burrow is also nursing a pinkie injury, but he shouldn't require offseason surgery to address either issue. Additionally, Taylor categorized Burrow's MCL sprain as an aggravation of the injury he dealt with in December. The Bengals are hopeful that after a couple months of rest, Burrow will be ready to resume workouts as a full participant at some point during OTAs.
Joe Burrow
Joe Burrow Shouldn't need offseason surgery
Tue, Feb 15, 2022, 1:38 PM
Burrow isn't expected to need surgery on the knee injury he suffered in the final minutes of the Super Bowl, Ian Rapoport of NFL Network reports.
Analysis: While the injury likely impacted his mobility late in the fourth quarter, Burrow never missed a snap. Still, it's apparently serious enough to require some type of rehab process, which Burrow should have time to complete before spring practices in May and June. Rapoport says the injury "shouldn't drastically alter [Burrow's] offseason."
Jake Browning
Jake Browning Signs future deal
Tue, Feb 15, 2022, 1:34 PM
Browning signed a reserve/future contract with the Bengals on Tuesday.
Analysis: Browning joined the Bengals this offseason after spending his first two seasons in the NFL on the Vikings' practice squad. He was elevated to the active roster twice during the 2021 campaign, but he's yet to make his NFL debut.
Samaje Perine
Samaje Perine No production in loss
Mon, Feb 14, 2022, 4:49 PM
Perine had two carries for zero yards and failed to catch his lone target Sunday during the loss to the Rams in Super Bowl LVI.
Analysis: Perine played only 13 offensive snaps Sunday, with his most impactful play being a zero-yard run on third down late in the fourth quarter, which helped set up Cincinnati's turnover on downs a play later. The 26-year-old caught three passes for 43 yards and a touchdown during the AFC Championship Game but was unable to replicate that production in the Super Bowl. Perine totaled 55 carries for 246 yards and 27 receptions for 196 yards and two total touchdowns in 16 games during the regular season, and he remains under contract with the Bengals for $1.5 million in 2022.
C.J. Uzomah
C.J. Uzomah Two catches in Super Bowl
Mon, Feb 14, 2022, 4:44 PM
Uzomah (knee) caught both his targets for 11 yards during Sunday's 23-20 loss to the Rams in Super Bowl LVI.
Analysis: Uzomah suited up for the Super Bowl despite suffering a sprained MCL during the AFC Championship Game two weeks prior, and he still operated as Cincinnati's No. 1 tight end. However, he was unable to replicate his success from the first two rounds of the playoffs, when he totaled 13 receptions for 135 yards and one touchdown. The 29-year-old set career highs across the board during the regular season in 2021 with 49 catches for 493 yards and five touchdowns in 16 games, and he's scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent at the start of the new league year in March.
Tyler Boyd
Tyler Boyd Five catches in Super Bowl
Sun, Feb 13, 2022, 10:35 PM
Boyd recorded five receptions on six targets for 48 yards in Sunday's 23-20 Super Bowl LVI loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Boyd delivered his best performance of the postseason in terms of both receptions and yards. As has been the case all season, he worked primarily underneath routes while both Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins pushed further down the field. Boyd's longest catch of the day came early in the fourth quarter and went for a gain of 16 yards, though he also delivered an 11-yard reception in the first half. Overall, Boyd had his least productive season since 2017, and his role isn't likely to expand in 2022 with both Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins returning to the team.
Joe Mixon
Joe Mixon Stars in trick-play score
Sun, Feb 13, 2022, 10:24 PM
Mixon rushed the ball 15 times for 72 yards in Sunday's 23-20 Super Bowl LVI loss to the Rams. He added five receptions for one yard and also threw a six-yard touchdown.
Analysis: Mixon was effective as a rusher, delivering three gains of at least 10 yards. However, his primary impact came midway through the second quarter when he delivered a six-yard touchdown pass to Tee Higgins in the back corner of the end zone on a trick play. Mixon posted one of his better games of the postseason and combined to record 160 rushing yards combined between the AFC Championship Game and Super Bowl. He'll return to Cincinnati as the team's lead back for the 2022 season, and it's possible that he'll have more running lanes if the Bengals upgrade their offensive line during the offseason.
Ja'Marr Chase
Ja'Marr Chase Solid in Super Bowl loss
Sun, Feb 13, 2022, 10:10 PM
Chase recorded five receptions on eight targets for 89 yards in Sunday's 23-20 Super Bowl LVI loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Chase was overshadowed by Tee Higgins' two-touchdown performance, though he still delivered explosive plays of his own. He set up Cincinnati's first points of the game when he hauled in a 46-yard reception after beating Jalen Ramsey down the right sideline. Chase also added a 17-yard catch on the final drive of the game as the team was pushing down the field in an effort to attempt a game-tying field goal. Despite the disappointing loss, Chase was excellent throughout the postseason by topping 100 yards twice and posting five gains of 20 or more yards across four contests. He'll head into his second season as the primary big-play threat in the Bengals' offense while working opposite Higgins.
Tee Higgins
Tee Higgins Delivers long touchdown
Sun, Feb 13, 2022, 9:55 PM
Higgins recorded four receptions on seven targets for 100 yards and two touchdowns in Sunday's 23-20 Super Bowl LVI loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Higgins made the most of his four catches by tallying a pair of touchdowns in the biggest game of the season. The first came on a trick play that resulted in a six-yard pass from Joe Mixon in the back corner of the end zone. Higgins then added an explosive 75-yard touchdown on the first play of the second half when he beat Jalen Ramsey down the sideline and outraced the rest of the Rams' secondary to the end zone. He was largely quiet from there, as Joe Burrow was consistently pressured and the Bengals' offense struggled to produce as a result. Overall, Higgins delivered impressive results in his second professional season, and he will continue to be a dynamic performer working opposite Ja'Marr Chase in 2022.
Joe Burrow
Joe Burrow Overcome by pressure
Sun, Feb 13, 2022, 9:38 PM
Burrow completed 22 of 33 passes for 263 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions in Sunday's 23-20 Super Bowl LVI loss to the Rams.
Analysis: Burrow's highlight reel play of the game came on the first snap of the second half, when he connected with Tee Higgins for a 75-yard touchdown. However, besides that connection, Burrow managed only 5.9 yards per attempt and was under consistent pressure in the final two quarters of the contest. Despite the disappointing end to the campaign, Burrow led Cincinnati to an impressive postseason run that included upset wins over the Titans and Chiefs -- two of the favorites in the AFC. He'll now turn his focus to the 2022 season, with each of Higgins, Ja'Marr Chase and Joe Mixon all back as his primary offensive weapons.
