Contemplating skipping OTAs
Tue, May 3, 2022, 1:43 PM
Bates said he intends to take it day-by-day when asked if he'll join the Bengals for voluntary OTAs, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: The Bengals placed their franchise tag on Bates at the beginning of March. The two sides have until July 15 to work out a multi-year deal, but if they don't, Bates will operate under the terms of the franchise tag during the 2022 campaign, though his comments suggest he may be willing to sit out if he's unhappy with the negotiation progress.
Targeting training camp return
Tue, May 3, 2022, 11:00 AM
Wilson (shoulder) will not take part in OTAs but anticipates being healthy for training camp, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Wilson underwent a shoulder procedure in late February to clean up a torn labrum suffered in Week 13 of the 2021 campaign and he appears to be progressing as planned. Assuming he continues on that track, Wilson should resume his duties as the starting weakside linebacker in 2022.
Re-ups with Cincy
Mon, May 2, 2022, 3:06 PM
Huber re-signed Monday with the Bengals on a one-year contract.
Analysis: Huber is back for his 14th season in Cincinnati, but he'll have to battle Drue Chrisman for the punting job throughout OTAs and training camp. The 36-year-old appeared in all 17 regular-season games for the Bengals in 2021, averaging 46.4 yards per boot.
Joe Burrow
Joe Burrow Reports for offseason workouts
Mon, May 2, 2022, 10:32 AM
Burrow (knee) reported for the start of Cincinnati's offseason workouts Monday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Burrow is recovering from a left MCL sprain, but he avoided surgery for the injury, and the Bengals haven't expressed any significant public concern about the star quarterback's health. It remains to be seen, however, whether Burrow's rehab has progressed enough for him to begin offseason activities without any limitations. In any case, Burrow now will benefit from another offseason to build chemistry with top wideouts Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins, the latter of whom is recovering from left labrum surgery.
Lands in Cincy
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 5:39 PM
The Bengals selected Gunter in the seventh round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 252nd overall.
Analysis: A three-year starter at Coastal Carolina, Gunter compiled the second most sacks (18) of any Chanticleer across his collegiate career. At 6-foot-4, 258 pounds, the soon-to-be 23-year-old certainly has the body type to be an effective pass rusher at the NFL, but he needs to refine his technique and build up stamina in order to do so.
Cincy bound
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 2:04 PM
The Bengals selected Anderson in the fifth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 166th overall.
Analysis: Cincinnati moved up in a deal with Chicago in order to secure Anderson out of Toledo. Anderson is one of the most athletic safeties in this class. He ran a 4.36 in the 40-yard dash and a 6.64 in the three-cone drill, both of which rate above the 90th percentile at his position. He's not just an athlete, though. Anderson racked up 84 tackles as a junior in 2019 and broke up 21 passes in his college career. This is a good landing spot for him as he'll get to learn behind Jessie Bates and Vonn Bell.
Depth for Cincy
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 12:38 PM
Th Bengals selected Volson in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 136th overall.
Analysis: A two-star recruit out of high school, Volson developed into a quality offensive lineman for North Dakota State, playing in 41 total games across three different positions. The redshirt senior is hardly an athletic body and probably is too big to become a swing guard at the NFL level, but he's a capable run blocker for a team that desperately needs to improve along the offensive line.
Bengals pick up option
Sat, Apr 30, 2022, 9:13 AM
The Bengals have picked up Williams' fifth-year option, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Williams, the No. 11 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, is now set to make $12.6 million in 2023. He projects to protect Joe Burrow's blind side for at least the next two seasons.
Scooped by Cincy

The Bengals selected Carter in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 95th overall.
Analysis: Carter is light for an interior defensive lineman at 282 pounds, but he has experience playing across the front, so he could settle in at end. He had 17.5 sacks in four seasons at Florida and projects as a rotational depth piece for Cincinnati's impressive front.
Nabbed by defending AFC champs
Fri, Apr 29, 2022, 8:17 PM
The Bengals selected Taylor-Britt in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 60th overall.
Analysis: Taylor-Britt (5-foot-11, 196 pounds) might be a multi-purpose defensive back for the Bengals after a standout career at Nebraska, potentially competing for reps at either corner or safety. While both positions are settled for the moment in Cincinnati, Taylor-Britt could emerge as a swing backup at both spots and essentially function as a starter despite playing off the bench. The one issue with his projection is the fact that nearly all these traits also apply to first-round Cincinnati selection Dax Hill, a cornerback/safety tweener out of Michigan. The Bengals have a lot of options to consider between the two versatile defenders.
Goes to Cincinnati in first round
Thu, Apr 28, 2022, 10:33 PM
The Bengals selected Hill in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft, 31st overall.
Analysis: Hill was mostly a safety at Michigan but has the frame and athleticism more conventionally seen in cornerbacks, so he might see more time at corner and less at safety than he did in college. It's also possible that the Bengals targeted him as potential long-term insurance if they can't re-sign Jessie Bates at free safety, but the Bengals would be better off keeping Bates and making a starting cornerback out of Hill. He could be an immediate upgrade over Eli Apple.
Tee Higgins
Tee Higgins Bouncing back from shoulder issue
Tue, Apr 12, 2022, 4:10 PM
Higgins had the labrum in his left shoulder repaired last month, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Analysis: The report notes that the wideout, who was spotted at a Cincinnati Reds game Tuesday with his left arm in a sling, is expected to recover from the procedure well before training camp. This past season, the 2020 second-rounder caught 74 of his 110 targets for 1,091 yards and six TDs in 14 games. In 2022, the 23-year-old will reprise his starting role in a Bengals wide receiver corps that also includes the ascending Ja'Marr Chase as well as Tyler Boyd.
Mitchell Wilcox
Mitchell Wilcox Re-signs with Cincinnati
Fri, Apr 8, 2022, 1:26 PM
Wilcox signed a one-year deal with the Bengals on Friday, Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic reports.
Analysis: Wilcox appeared in 15 games for the Bengals last year, but the majority of his snaps came on special teams. Across 81 offensive snaps, the 25-year-old tight end caught three of five targets for 16 yards. He figures to garner a similar role in 2022, as Cincinnati's tight-end room remains essentially the same after swapping C.J. Uzomah -- who signed with the Jets this offseason -- for Hayden Hurst.
Nick Eubanks
Nick Eubanks Signs with Cincinnati
Tue, Apr 5, 2022, 2:39 PM
Eubanks signed with the Bengals on Tuesday.
Analysis: The undrafted free agent out of Michigan spent his rookie campaign splitting time between the Eagles and Lions' practice squads, but he never made his NFL debut. Cincinnati replaced C.J. Uzomah, who signed with the Jets this offseason, by signing Hayden Hurst and also have Drew Sample, a 2019 second-round pick, so Eubanks figures to serve as a depth option if he makes the initial 53-man roster.
Stanley Morgan
Stanley Morgan Back with Cincinnati
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 10:55 PM
Morgan signed a two-year contract with the Bengals on Monday, Doug Kyed of Pro Football Focus reports.
Analysis: Morgan didn't factor much into the team's passing game a season ago, and he will likely serve as receiver depth and a solid special teams option in 2022. During his first three seasons with Cincinnati, he's tallied five receptions for 29 yards on 14 total targets and has one rushing attempt for three yards. Morgan also finished with 22 yards as a kick returner a season ago.
Trenton Irwin
Trenton Irwin Back with Bengals
Mon, Mar 21, 2022, 3:36 PM
Irwin re-signed with the Bengals on Monday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Analysis: Irwin appeared in seven games for Cincinnati last season and will rejoin the team for 2022. The 26-year-old had two catches for 34 yards and also returned three kickoffs for 31 yards in seven games.
Signs with Bengals
Sun, Mar 20, 2022, 11:13 PM
Collins signed a three-year contract with the Bengals on Sunday.
Analysis: Collins was expected to meet with another team Sunday but ultimately signed a multi-year deal with Cincinnati. After being released by the Cowboys on Thursday, the 28-year-old is slated to serve as a starting guard on the Bengals' offensive line, which is expected to have at least three new starters in 2022.
Remains with Bengals
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 5:33 PM
Apple agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract with the Bengals on Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
Analysis: Apple made 16 regular-season appearances during his first year with Cincinnati, and he totaled 49 tackles (38 solo), two interceptions and 10 pass defenses. He appears to be in line for a starting role once again heading into 2022, but it's possible that the Bengals could address the cornerback position in this year's draft.
Lands two-year deal
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 3:14 PM
Tupou agreed to terms on a two-yer contract with the Bengals on Thursday, Ben Baby of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis: Tupou has appeared in every game for Cincinnati across the last two seasons, and he'll remain with the team on a two-year pact. The 27-year-old logged 12 tackles (three solo) last year.
Hayden Hurst
Hayden Hurst Joins AFC champs
Thu, Mar 17, 2022, 2:14 PM
Hurst is signing a one-year contract with the Bengals, EnterSports Management reports.
Analysis: Hurst will help replace C.J. Uzomah, who signed with the Jets earlier in the week. The Bengals also have Drew Sample, a 2019 second-round pick, while Hurst himself was a 2018 first-rounder. Neither has emerged as a consistent pass-catching threat in the NFL, but Hurst has shown some flashes, including a 30-349-2 receiving line on only 39 targets in 2019 with the Ravens, followed by a 56-571-6 line on 88 targets in 2020 for the Falcons. He then dropped to 26-221-3 in 13 games last year, working behind standout rookie Kyle Pitts in a subpar offense. If nothing else, Hurst should get more red-zone looks in Cincinnati, playing with Joe Burrow, Ja'Marr Chase and Co.
